Story Play created by Hudson and Peyton
Family Reading-Please join us on Monday mornings for family reading beginning September 23rd. We will begin at 8:45 and end at 9:00. Enter through the school front door and join us in room 115. Parents, extended family, caregivers and siblings are welcome to join us. Please expect other children to join you if they do not have anyone visiting that day. I will drum to let you know that the session is over.

Birthdays- we love to celebrate birthdays at school. Your child will decorate a birthday letter for the classroom math wall, receive a book and small gift bag. You are welcome to celebrate with the class by sending a treat to school like a little bit of carmel corn in a brown bag with a pencil (thanks Acacia!)

Scholastic Orders-family book orders will be processed on the Friday following the forms being sent home. It takes about two weeks for the orders to arrive.

School Supply Fee $25.00-I have purchased the student supplies. If you have not yet paid, please send in your child's fee in an envelope with your child's name. If you are unable to cover the fee, please let the office know.

Family Home Reading Program-this program will begin late September and includes a weekly book bag with about five books. A covering letter will be sent home next week describing how the program works.

Classroom student needs-Please ensure that your child has a change of clothes and running shoes at school with his/her name on them.

Math-We have been busy counting objects, creating patterns and doing sorting activities using loose part materials. The children have enjoyed many counting songs and rhymes as well as math picture books. I have introduced the Counting Framework during which the children work with one partner to count loose parts. This framework will be repeated once weekly all year and through this the children will learn most of the primary counting skills and become really fluent with numbers.

Language Arts- One of the learning frameworks  introduced is Writing Workshop. Writing Workshop is a daily writing program that begins with a mini lesson, interactive drawing & writing, and ends with the children drawing their own picture story. This month we are working on co-creating story picture criteria and writing their own name.

Story Play-this is a oral language framework during which the children work with a partner to create a story narrative using loose parts.

Monthly Family Pot Luck-I host a family pot luck lunch in the classroom each month beginning in October, 12:15 to 1:00 pm. If you are unable to attend you are welcome to send a dish and I will keep it in the classroom fridge. Volunteers are welcome to come early at 12:05 to set up chairs and tables. The children come in from recess at 12:20 and sit with you or another family if no one is able to come for them. Then I send groups to get lunch from the hallway where tables are set up. Older siblings from other classrooms are invited to join us, which is really lovely when a parent, grandparent or caregiver is unable to attend.

Monthly Calendar Sept/Oct– I have sent home a classroom calendar which includes the News Clues schedule for your child, the first family potluck date, professional development and district inservice days as well as any upcoming special school wide events.

Parent Volunteers- Our outdoor program is dependent on parent and community volunteers. A monthly offsite schedule will be available through google docs which requires a gmail account to access. If you do not have a gmail account then just let me know which days you are able to volunteer and I can update the document for you.

Parent volunteers are also very welcome in the classroom.

Offsite Schedule –Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and will begin late September or early October. Please send your child to school dressed for the outdoors, including a waterproof rain jacket, waterproof rain pants (or rain suit) and boots.

A weekly group email will be sent on Sunday mornings to confirm the weekly schedule including sites i.e.: seashore, forest, Milner Gardens or Neck Point.

I recommend saving two bread bags and a pair of socks be kept in your child's backpack in case they get wet feet. Then we can simply change his/her socks, line the wet boot with a bread bag and keep the feet dry until we return to school.

Milner Gardens- Mrs. Radigan (K) and I will be travelling to Milner Gardens for five visits this year. Once we have confirmation of the dates, a permission slip will be sent home.

Weekly Cooking Program- I have applied for a grant to cover our weekly cooking program and am looking for volunteers interested in helping with the program. You would work with two students in the classroom Monday or Tuesday mornings.

Thanks and have a lovely family weekend
