Nature Play On Vancouver Island

Nature Kindergarten On Vancouver Island

October 2019 Kindergarten News

A friendly welcome greeted the children prepared by classroom volunteer Sophia Toole
Offsite Days:
Our tentative offsite days will be Tue, Wed, Thur alternating between Woodstream Park and the Departure Bay Seashore. We will require two parent volunteers for each of these days. If Fridays work best for you please let me know because there is some flexibility with the days. This week on Thursday, we will be travelling by school bus to Milner Gardens and no volunteer is required for that day. Please send in your permission slip if you have not already done so.

This Tuesday we will accompany the K/1 class with Mrs Pickerell.

SPCA
Mrs. Radigan and I have booked the Kindness Counts program to visit our classrooms. The cost is $1.00 per child. Please send in a loonie for this program over the next week. They will be coming on Monday October 7th. :)

Cooking:
We have lots of apples leftover and the children are eager to cook. I thought apple muffins would be tasty. I have all of the ingredients and would like a helper on Monday or Tuesday mid-morning. I have organized the children so that two cook each session and then share with the class.

Math:
The children have each been assigned a math partner and have practiced working together throughout the room. They enjoyed sorting the apples into different groups on Friday and counting how many in each of the groups. On Monday we will continue to enjoy math with the apples with the children comparing length and height.

This month we are working on the quantity of five and the children are playing small group math games using manipulative and a work board.

We will continue with our Counting Jar Framework each Monday morning.

Math journals will be introduced this week with a simple question for the children to work on collaboratively. How many letters are in your name. How can you show your thinking.

Grade Two Buddies:
We have enjoyed two Friday afternoons with our Big Buddies with Story Play. Half of the children walk to Mrs. King's room while the other have remain in the Kindergarten room and are joined for Story Play by their assigned Grade Two buddy.

News Clues:
We will begin this program on Tuesday. I will be sending home small brown bags on Monday for the children to record their clues and carry the object to school in the bag. We will be doing this routine in the afternoon after the children eat lunch. If your child misses the assigned day, just send it in and we will make sure that he/she has an opportunity to still share.

Learning About Your Child's Day:
Here are a few questions you may want to ask your child about their school day

  1. Who did you sit with at lunch
  2. Who did you play with at recess
  3. What did you play at recess
  4. Did you help anyone today?
  5. What centre did you choose in the morning? afternoon?
Autumn has arrived so expect to see lots of art and science happening in the classroom to reflect what the children are noticing outdoors.

Thanks,

Liz
