This spring we are focusing on reviewing subitizing, oral counting to 20, number sets to 10, skip counting by 2's & 5's, number formation, making a good guess and patterning. The children are also collecting data using different graphs; pictograph, venn diagrams and bar graphs. Here are a few of the activities that they have been enjoying. 1. Counting Collections - Our shared math resources includes a collection of containers; ice cube trays, milk cups, plates, tart tins, ten frames and muffin tins which I use each Monday morning for counting collections. Now that I have set up my math learning centres for June I keep a small set in the classroom. The children are sorting their objects in groups of 2, 5 or 10 and then counting. They are recording their counting using a sketch and printing the total sum. 2. Measurement - I reintroduced non-standard measurement using a variety of loose parts. Good morning, I hope that you are enjoying your long weekend. I have been in the school organizing our new math cupboards for shared resources with the last of our math grant. These last few weeks of school are going to fly by. We are beginning our final inquiry on nests using art materials, videos, books and structured conversations. The children are also interested in mason bees so I have been collecting some materials to support this interest as well. You may have noticed that the children are using tools for counting like ice cube trays, cups and plates as their quantities have grown and they are striving for accuracy. During counting collections the children are counting by 2's, 5's or 10's. Happy May , We have a new student joining our class on Monday. Decklan is from Ontario and I am sure that our children and families will welcome. him to Nanaimo. He has an older sister Hadley also joining our school. I will revise the class phone book as soon as his family completes the permission form. the children have welcomed him and are taking turns with his transition to our class. In math the children have been having a lot of fun with our measurement and capacity unit. Ms. McDonald has been teaching this unit in the forest and at the seashore along with some math play in the classroom. Our classroom sand table has been outfitted with measurement tools and this week, Ms. McDonald is introducing a new activity using scales. and water play. During a cross curricular activity, the children used our home made finger paint in art, creating a spring mural for the school hallway.
