Mark Making In a Play Based Program: Update

Update on our mark making project work.

This morning was a big step forward in our class mark making project. We found some hard cardboard tubes in the recycling box and added them to the mark making table.

I like to include this table as a zone in my classroom to provide playful invitations for children to do mark making. Today's set up included the hard cardboard tube, a 2oz. bottle of acrylic paint and a small bowl. The standard materials at the centre now include water colour papers including thick paper and tissue paper as well as water colour paints and brushes.

As children spend more time in this zone we will continue to add materials that have been introduced and practiced in the atelier such as charcoal, oil pastels and chunky crayons such as Stockmar or Ooly beeswax product and Stabilo woody crayons. Our sensory zone also has mark making tools such as a wooden box with fine grain play sand along with dry brushes and cardboard scrapers.

L. stopped at the table to explore the materials, choosing an acrylic bottle and pouring some into a bowl. She stamped over the entire paper stopping a few times to refresh the paint on the tube. Without waiting for it to dry she began to add water colour paints to the circles, stopping on only to blend colours together on the tray lid. She lifted colour off the darker circles with a wet brush, moving the excess to another circle.

As I observed I found myself wondering how she would use the materials if I set out a invitation with her dry painting and drawing tools like the new Stabilo woody crayons or chalk pastels. However, since this is the final day before a two week break I will have to hold onto my wonder for the new year.
